Description
Children spend the hot summer afternoon enjoying the cool waters of the fountain behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The fountain was gifted to the United States by the Italian government to mark the U.S. 1926 Sesquicentennial. Featuring four sea horses, symbols of strength and vitality, this fountain is actually a copy carved after the famed fountain at the Villa Borghese Gardens in Rome, Italy. It was designed by painter Christopher Unterberger and sculpted by Vincenzo Pacetti. The fountain unfortunately arrived too late for installation at the Sesquicentennial exposition but was later permanently installed instead in 1928 as part of the original landscaping at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. For generations since, many have enjoyed its unique beauty and cool waters.
