Description

Built on the River Cher in the Loire Valley in France, this castle takes one on a journey to another time when the country was ruled by kings and queens who lived in great splendor. This image captures the lovely exterior of the chateau on a summer's day. I visited this castle on my first trip to France and found it's beauty and great history so interesting. It belonged to many royal families over the years including King Francis I , Henry II and Catherine de Medici, who spent a fortune on the chateau and held numerous spectacular nighttime parties there. She also had the first ever display of fireworks in France at the castle in 1560 when her son ascended the throne as Francis II. The castle was visited over the years by Louis XIV, Voltaire and Montesquieu, served as a hospital ward during World War I and was a refuge during World War II, as part of the "free" zone bordered by the River Cher on which it is built.
